What do I offer?
I offer Online Counseling support for people living abroad.
Besides helping to create mental health awareness related to your move abroad or your life abroad, I offer psychological support based on the Solution Focused Counseling approach.
A typical session will last 60 minutes. After each session there is room for a follow-up email contact where feedback can be given or questions can be asked and answered. Together we can decide how many sessions you would like to have. There is no roadmap for mental health wellbeing, but together we can identify your personal coping mechanisms that work best for you as well as identifying triggers or obstacles that prevent you from thriving.
The first session is free of charge as it is important to find out if there is a good connection between us.
What is Solution Focused Counseling?
Solution Focused Counseling is an evolving evidence-based approach. The power of Solution Focused Counseling lies in the fact that it makes use of the existing strengths, resources and coping skills of the client. Sometimes the client is not aware of these coping skills but together we can discover what they are. It is a practical and brief counseling approach that concentrates on the here and now and looks towards the future.
How does it work?
Collaboration
Together, you and I will examine what you consider to be the challenge for which you are seeking help at this time. By asking the right questions I hope to help you verbalise and get as clear as possible what you hope to achieve.
Identifying your coping skills
As mentioned before, the Solution Focused approach makes use of the existing strengths and resources of the client. However, the client is not always aware of these coping skills. As your Mental Health Companion Abroad, I will help you to identify and consequently create an increased awareness regarding your existing coping skills, which work for you in your specific situation. As we go through the sessions, the method for discovering your coping skills will become clearer.
Tasks which help you to put your coping skills to use
While each case is different, there might be tasks in the form of homework assignments between sessions to help you become more aware of your strengths and improve your coping skills in order to help you thrive.
What I don’t offer?
I do not offer online clinical counselling for personality disorders (i.e: Bi-polar disorder, borderline disorder, schizophrenia, psychosis, etc.). I strongly believe that online counseling for personality disorders is a safe method when there is a local back up system in place in case of an emergency. My clients reside in different parts of the world. Chances exist that I don’t have a local referral system set up in the country where you are currently residing. I therefore suggest you look for a clinical psychologist that does have a local referral system in place.
Having said this, however, I can be of support to you if you are living, working with or if you are a caregiver of someone who is experiencing mental health challenges or has a personality disorder.
